Radio New Zealand introduces Creative Commons licences to online scheduling
State-funded public radio broadcaster, Radio New Zealand now offers their daily online programme schedules under a Creative Commons BY-ND 3.0 New Zealand Licence. Despite the No Derivative aspect of the licence, users may make adaptations subject to conditions set out on the website.
According to New Media Manager, Richard Hulse a Creative Commons licence increases the value of the content for all parties by simplifying the permission process.
“Under normal commercial circumstances a prospective user of the schedules would have to get permission from us, and often there would be a legal agreement covering what may and may not be done. This takes time and money for both parties, and probably reduces the overall value of the content.”
“Creative Commons was chosen because it is widely understood and allows us to be explicit about how the content can be used.”
Freeing up certain content has encouraged businesses to take up and use the Radio New Zealand Creative Commons material as several iPhone application developers are already investigated how the data can be utilized.
