New Zealand classics released as CC ePub books

The New Zealand Electronic Text Centre have announced the release of more than 1000 New Zealand eBooks, which are freely available for download on the NZETC website. NZETC staff have digitised the texts, structuring and reformatting them so that they are easily able to be converted to popular digital formats such as web pages and ebooks. Most of these texts which were previously only available as printed publications, and a significant amount of work has had to be performed to make them fully accessible in a digital form. Many of the texts are then released under a CC BY-SA 3.0 New Zealand licence.

These eBooks, made available using the major emerging ePub standard, represent some favourite texts already accessible from NZETC website such as The Garden Party and Other Stories, by Katherine Mansfield. They are suited to viewing on modern eBook devices like iPhones, Sony Readers, and the IRex Iliad.

According to the NZETC Blog, the convenience of modern eBook readers means that users are able to carry large numbers of eBooks with them on pocket-sized devices, often supporting features which make the reading of electronic books more pleasurable than in the past. These features include long battery life (7,000+ page-turns), non-reflective screen for easy reading under all lighting, and wireless access for downloading eBooks.
