Koordinates showcases Govt CC datasets

New Zealand Internet start up Koordinates has been providing map data, some of it under a range of Creative Commons licences since late 2007.

Recently Koordinates was the online publication point for the Ministry for the Environment’s Land Cover Database and the Land Environments New Zealand classification under a Creative Commons Attribution licence

The Ministry for the Environment acts as Government’s primary adviser on the New Zealand environment and international matters that affect the environment. According to the website, its data published on Koordinates could “be combined with other geographic information to reveal new information on patterns and trends of land use and land cover.” Koordinates then provides an online avenue for bringing data such as this to professionals around the world, and Creative Commons licences enable these professionals to share and build upon the existing work.

Ed Corkery, CEO of Koordinates is thrilled with “such a level of buy-in to the Creative Commons concept from a Government Ministry with regards to professional quality mapping.”

We look forward to seeing further reuse of the mapping data and future instances of Creative Commons licensing from within Government.
