Richard Stallman, Wellington Lectures
Date: 14/08/2008
Richard Matthew Stallman, often abbreviated "rms" is an American software freedom activist, hacker (programmer), and software developer.
The 'The Danger of Software Patents' lecture will take place at Victoria University (Pipitea Campus) GB LT2 from 12:00-2:00pm. He will explain how software patents obstruct software development. Software patents are patents that cover software ideas. They restrict the development of software, so that every design decision brings a risk of getting sued. Patents in other fields restrict factories, but software patents restrict every computer user. Economic research shows that they even retard progress.
The 'Free Software in Ethics and Practice' lecture will take place at Victoria University (Pipitea Campus) RH LT1 from 6:00-8:30pm. Richard Stallman will speak about the goals and philosophy of the Free Software Movement, and the status and history of the GNU operating system, which in combination with the kernel Linux is now used by tens of millions of users world-wide.
There is no need to book or make any kind of reservation. All you need do is turn up. You are welcome.
