LIANZA Conference 2008: Poropitia Outside the Box

Date: 02/11/2008

E nga mana, e nga reo, e nga karangatanga maha o nga hau e wha, nau mai, piki mai, haere mai. Ki te hononga nga waka e tatou kia whakanui ai nga mea katoa. No reira, ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takimano. No reira, tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa.

The theme for LIANZA Conference 2008 is Poropitia Outside the Box.

This refers to the shifting nature of what we do and the world we work in. We have to ensure that we are developing and growing with the communities we serve.

We plan to deliver you a conference with a difference – one which will challenge you, change you, and help you change libraries.

LIANZA Conference 2008 will be held at the SKYCITY Convention Centre, Auckland, New Zealand, from Sunday 2 to Wednesday 5 November 2008.

Auckland is the perfect place to hold this conference. New Zealand’s biggest population centre is a bustling, culturally and historically diverse place with great activity and entertainment options.

We look forward to seeing you at Poropitia Outside the Box, LIANZA Conference 2008.

Professor Lawrence Lessig will be presenting a keynote address “Keeping the outside outside the box: The role of independence in the profession of the librarian, and academy, and the threats both now face”. Lawrence Lessig is a Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and founder of the school's Center for Internet and Society. He teaches and writes in the areas of constitutional law, contracts, and the law of cyberspace. He is the author of Code v2 (2007), Free Culture (2004), The Future of Ideas (2001) and Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (1999). He is on the board of the Creative Commons project, MAPLight and the Sunlight Foundation.

On Monday afternoon Keitha Booth, Brian Opie and Andrew Matangi from the State Services Commission will look at how New Zealand public sector information is managed. Currently it is managed according to the principles set out in the Policy Framework for Government Held Information. A 2008 review is developing a comparable set of principles relevant for the 21stcentury users of government-held information.

On Tuesday afternoon Kathy Sheat from Copyright Licensing Ltd will provide an overview of copyright law and the changes made under the Copyright (New Technologies) Amendment Bill which was adopted in April 2008. She will look at the statutory exemptions that relate to libraries and libraries in educational institutions.

Clive Lansink will examine the changing obligations on publishers and libraries to accommodate the needs of people with print disabilities. Issues to do with cyberspace and the accessibility of information published by private entities are right at the cutting edge of disability law, and further advocacy for change will be required.
